FAQ - What is Al-Anon Literature?
Al-Anon literature is publications focused on helping family and friends of Alcoholics. You can see our wide variety of literature available on this website. It ranges from pamphlets to books.
Some literature is focused on getting the Al-Anon/Alateen message out to those who need help and are unaware that help exists. Other literature is focused on helping existing members of Al-Anon and Alateen further their recovery from the affects of someone else’s drinking.
- Who buys Al-Anon literature?
Al-Anon and Alateen literature is purchased by a wide variety of people. Some people purchase literature for themselves, to help them recover from the affects of some else’s drinking. Other’s purchase it to assist people they know, or have come in contact with, who might benefit from Al-Anon or Alateen. Some organizations or institutions also purchase literature to assist people they work with.
- What is (CAL) Conference Approved Literature?
CAL is Conference Approved Literature. We only sell Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature (CAL). It is Al-Anon and Alateen literature that has been written by Al-Anon and Alateen members. Written submissions are reviewed by Al-Anon members to ensure that they adhere to our Al-Anon principles. Once approved, they material is published with the CAL logo. It is usually printed on the back of pamphlets and on the first few pages of books. If it doesn’t have the CAL logo, it is not Conference Approved Literature.

The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.
Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution; does not engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any cause. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its own voluntary contributions.
Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic.

Alateen is the same as Al-Anon with a few exceptions: 1) the members are teenagers; and 2) their meetings also have a few Al-Anon members present to assist with the meeting if called upon by Alateen members. The focus is the same as Al-Anon, to help family and friends of Alcoholics.

An LDC is a Literature Distribution Centre. This website is part of the Alberta, NWT, and Southeastern BC Area LDC. We are currently located in Calgary, Alberta but serve the entire geographical area just mentioned. Our organization frequently goes by the name Al-Anon Central Service Office of Alberta (ACSOA).
- Who is the Al-Anon Central Service Office of Alberta (ACSOA)?
We are the Al-Anon Central Service Office of Alberta (ACSOA). We are the literature distribution centre for Alberta, NWT, and the Southeastern part of British Columbia. We chose this name when we began operations back in the late 1970’s.
- What does the Al-Anon Central Service Office of Alberta (ACSOA) do?
We distribute literature to Alberta, NWT, and Southeastern part of British Columbia.
- Why can’t I buy literature if I live outside of Alberta, Northwest Territories, and Southeastern part of British Columbia?
The Al-Anon Central Service Office of Alberta (ACSOA) reports to Al-Anon Area 80 Assembly. This body only represents Alberta, NWT, and Southeastern British Columbia. Other parts of Canada (and the world) have their own Literature Distribution Centre’s (LDC’s) which service their geographical areas. We work in harmony with each other so we do not service other Area’s.
- Are you a for profit organization?
The Al-Anon Central Service Office of Alberta (ACSOA) is a non-profit organization. We aim to cover our costs and have a prudent reserve on hand to continue operations during any slow times. Any surplus funds go to Al-Anon Area 80 Assembly (non profit as well) which use the funds to support the world wide fellowship of Al-Anon i.e. creating new literature, public service announcements, public outreach initiatives, etc.

You have a few options:
1. Use our on-line ordering system. Browse our website, and choose the quantity of each item you want to purchase, add it to your shopping cart, and once you are done shopping, proceed to the check out. At the check out you have the option of providing credit card payment information to us securely on-line, or using an alternately send it by FAX or phone. - How long will it take to receive my order?
We do our best to get literature sent to you as quickly as possible. If all your items are in stock, your order should be shipped within 7 days. If it is not in stock, we will contact you and discuss how you want to proceed i.e. ship what we have and ship the rest later, wait until we have everything in stock first, etc.
